EPI percutaneous electrolysis treatment

EPI®
(percutaneous electrolysis)

Galvanic current guided by ultrasound to treat tendinopathies and chronic injuries.

Intratissue percutaneous electrolysis applies a galvanic current to the damaged tissue through an ultrasound-guided needle. It is designed for injuries that have been stalled for months and do not respond to conventional treatment.

Why a tendon becomes chronic

When a tendinopathy persists, the tissue stops behaving like tissue under repair: it becomes disorganised and the body stops trying to repair it. That is why it can hurt for months despite rest, and why rest alone almost never resolves it.

What EPI® does

The current produces a controlled local electrochemical reaction exactly on the degenerated area. That reaction restarts the repair process that had stopped, allowing the tendon to build healthy tissue again.

Ultrasound is essential

Without ultrasound guidance the technique loses its main advantage: precision. Ultrasound shows the needle and the lesion in real time, treats only affected tissue and avoids neighbouring structures. In our clinic all EPI® is ultrasound-guided.

Always with exercise

The technique prepares the ground, but progressive loading is what reorganises the fibres and restores the tendon's capacity. EPI® without an associated exercise programme wastes much of the result.

Frequently asked questions

How many EPI® sessions are needed?
A course of three to six sessions seven to ten days apart is typical, always with exercise in between. The response is assessed with ultrasound and by how pain behaves during activity.
Is it painful?
You feel a cramping or burning sensation for the seconds the current is applied. It is intense but very short, and most patients tolerate it well. Local tenderness may remain for a day.
Can I keep playing sport during treatment?
Yes, with adapted loading. Exercise is in fact part of the treatment: what is adjusted is the intensity, not the activity as a whole.
