Diathermy treatment

Diathermy

Radiofrequency that generates deep heat to speed up tissue recovery.

Diathermy generates heat inside the tissue using radiofrequency. Unlike surface heat, it works at depth: it activates circulation, reduces pain and prepares the area so it can be worked on.

Heat where it is actually needed

A hot pack barely gets past the skin. Radiofrequency raises the temperature of muscle, tendon or joint from within, increasing blood flow and oxygen supply exactly in the injured area, which is where it is needed for repair.

What it achieves

It improves tissue elasticity, reduces pain and speeds up repair. Applied at the start of a session it allows manual work on areas that would otherwise be too sensitive or stiff, and makes the manual therapy that follows more effective and more comfortable.

What the session is like

It is a pleasant treatment: a deep, growing warmth with no discomfort while the therapist moves the applicator over the area. Intensity is adjusted with you throughout. It usually takes the first 15 to 20 minutes of a longer session.

Rarely on its own

Diathermy creates favourable conditions but does not correct the cause. Its natural place is within a plan that continues with manual therapy and exercise; used in isolation, the effect is short-lived.

Frequently asked questions

Does diathermy burn or hurt?
No. It feels like a deep, pleasant warmth, and the intensity is adjusted with you throughout. If it ever feels excessive, it is turned down immediately.
Who should not have diathermy?
It is not applied to people with pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices, over metalwork depending on the case, during pregnancy, or over areas with thrombosis, active infection or tumours. This is always checked beforehand.
How many sessions are needed?
As it is integrated into physiotherapy treatment, it is not counted separately. It is used in the sessions where it adds value and dropped when the tissue no longer needs it.
